Why Ozone Generators Are Not Our First Choice
Ozone is a strong oxidizer that can reduce some odors, but it comes with concerns that federal agencies have documented for decades. We do not recommend ozone for occupied structures. Here is what to know before hiring anyone who does.
Ozone should not be used in occupied spaces
The United States Environmental Protection Agency has stated that ozone generators sold as air cleaners can produce ozone at concentrations that do not effectively remove many indoor contaminants and can be harmful if inhaled. People, pets and plants should be out of any space being treated with an ozone generator, and the space should be aired out before re-entry.
Residual ozone can continue to off-gas
Ozone reacts with materials in the home, and porous materials such as carpet, drywall, foam and upholstery can hold reaction byproducts that release back into the air after the machine is turned off. The room may smell "clean" for a day and then have a chemical smell return, and re-treating with more ozone does not solve the underlying problem.
Health concerns are well documented
The EPA and Consumer Product Safety Commission have published guidance describing the respiratory effects of ozone exposure and cautioning against the use of ozone generators as indoor air cleaners in occupied spaces. This is not a fringe position, it is the mainstream regulatory view. We follow it.

Our alternative: professionally applied ClO2
Chlorine dioxide (ClO2) is used in municipal drinking water, wastewater, food safety, produce washing and post-anthrax building cleanup. It is dosed, monitored and ventilated on a defined protocol so the space is safe for re-entry.
